Vegesacker Junge

The Vegesacker Junge is a fictional character symbolic of this town. He represents a young sailor who lost all his money because he spent his pay in the Vegesack harbour pubs. There is even an explanation for the place name Vegesack: If you spend all your money in the pub, your sack (or purse) will be empty. It is swept (German: gefegt) clean, and therefore a „Fege-Sack“…

As a representative of Vegesack, a lad in sailor’s costume will be often present at maritime events in Vegesack, together with officials.

A relief has been set in bronze in the foundry of the Bremer Vulkan shipyard. It was presented to the Stadtgarten association by shipyard workers, who installed it to the signal station.
